Academy Awards 2012 Shortlist

Its that time of year again when the members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Documentaries Screening Committee select a shortlist of 15 feature length documentaries and that are eligible for consideration for nomination for an Oscar for Best Documentary. From this list of fifteen films, five will be selected as finalists by voting members of the Academy's Documentaries Branch for the Best Documentary Oscar.

Green on the Red Carpet

Colin Firth, Oscar winner for Best Actor in the film "The Kings Speech" went eco-friendly on the red carpet at the Academy Awards Sunday night.  Firth and his wife Livia wore environmentally friendly clothing in an effort to raise awareness that you can look red carpet fabulous and be eco-conscious. Ford Foundation Announces $50 Million Film Program

One day before the start of the Sundance Film Festival, a program of the Sundance Institute, and its gathering of independent filmmakers from around the world, the Ford Foundation today announced a five-year, $50 million initiative to help find and support a new generation of filmmakers whose works address urgent social issues.

Revenge of the Electric Car Launches Trailer

Chris Paine's novel approach to gather traction for Revenge of the Electric Car, the follow-up to his 2006 documentary Who Killed the Electric Car has reached their goal of 10,000 fans on their Facebook page so the trailer is now released and available on their Facebook page.  The film is scheduled for launch in Spring 2011.

Economist and PBS NewsHour Launch Documentary Partnership

The Economist Film Project is an initiative by The Economist, in partnership with PBS NewsHour, to showcase independent documentary films from around the world. From Abu Dhabi to Albuquerque, from astronomy to agriculture, the project will showcase films that offer new ideas, perspectives, and insights that not only help make sense of the world, but also take a stand and provoke debate.

Sundance Starts

The annual Sundance Film Festival starts this week. The lineup of films selected to screen in the U.S. and World Cinema Dramatic and Documentary Competitions for 2011 have been announced Sundance Institute. The 2011 Sundance Film Festival runs January 20-30 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah.

Intl Documentary Awards Winners

The International Documentary Association Awards were presented Dec 3rd at the DGA Theater in Los Angeles.  The ceremony was hosted by Morgan Spurlock."Waste Land", a film about the world’s largest trash dump in Rio de Janeiro, as seen through the eyes of an artist, took top honors.  Lucy Walker's film also received the IDA's Pare Lorentz Award.  ("Waste Land" is also being considered for an Academy Award in the Feature Documentary category.)
